The Cameroonian Pioneer’s Unreleased Recordings Bridge 1970s Experimentation and Today’s Electronic Renaissance
On May 23, 2025, Africa Seven will release Trésor Magnétique (Magnetic Treasure), a treasure trove of unreleased tracks, alternate takes, and forgotten recordings by Francis Bebey, the Cameroonian composer who reshaped African music with his fusion of tradition and futurism. Drawn from over thirty rediscovered quarter-inch tapes in the archives of Bebey’s family, the compilation—meticulously restored at Abbey Road Studios—offers a fresh glimpse into the mind of an artist who defied boundaries decades before global audiences caught up.

Bebey, born in Douala in 1929, was a polymath: a novelist, poet, UNESCO musicologist, and one of the first African musicians to embrace synthesizers and drum machines in the 1960s. His work bridged Cameroonian folk rhythms, makossa grooves, and experimental electronics, creating a blueprint for today’s Afrofuturist wave. Trésor Magnétique captures this duality, from the whimsical satire of "La Condition Masculine" to the haunting fusion of pygmy flutes and synthetic textures in "Forest Nativity."
The album’s title nods to the magnetic tapes that preserved these recordings—many unheard since their creation—and to Bebey’s enduring influence. Tracks like "Immigration Amoureuse" and "Where Are You? I Love You" reveal his knack for weaving social critique and raw emotion into deceptively playful melodies. Meanwhile, the rhythmic complexity of cuts like "Dash, Baksheesh & Matabish" underscores why contemporary genres like amapiano and Afro-house owe a debt to his innovations.
Bebey’s son, Patrick, helped unearth these tapes, which had languished in obscurity. Their restoration not only revives his father’s legacy but also reaffirms a truth Bebey himself championed: African music isn’t static folklore—it’s a living, evolving force. As Trésor Magnétique proves, his vision remains as magnetic as ever.
Francis Bebey’s Trésor Magnétique Revelations
The new album’s 20 tracks highlight Bebey’s duality: playful humor ("Dash, Baksheesh & Matabish" skewers corruption) and aching poignancy ("Immigration Amoureuse" mirrors migrant struggles). Available in May on Soundcloud.
