Heading abroad? Make sure your trip is safe and fun by avoiding these four common mistakes people often make when traveling internationally.

Going abroad is an extremely exciting and enriching experience, but the logistics are more complicated than many people give it credit for. It’s easy to run into hiccups and stress if you’re not prepared. To help you plan better, we’ve outlined four common mistakes people often make when traveling internationally—and how to avoid them. |

Not Researching The Destination

Many travelers make the mistake of showing up at their destination without understanding the local customs, laws, weather, transportation options, and so forth. They assume they’ll just figure it out as they go, especially if they’re headed to a touristy location. However, this mindset can lead to awkward or even dangerous situations.

For instance, in some countries, it’s considered rude to leave a tip. In other places, it’s inappropriate to wear clothing that shows your shoulders if you’re a woman. Aside from these unique qualities, there are a host of nuances regarding every country’s infrastructure and culture you should be aware of.

By spending time researching your destination in advance, you’ll know what to pack, how to behave, and the best spots to explore.

Relying Solely on English

English is by far the most used language among travelers and in the tourism industry, but that doesn’t mean you should rely on it exclusively. Knowing a few phrases and being curious about learning will make your travels easier. Not to mention it’s just plain considerate!

Avoiding Data Plans

If you use data abroad without upgrading or changing your phone plan, you risk exorbitant international data fees. Many travelers overlook this and end up with huge bills because they had to make calls or use maps on their phones while exploring. You won’t always have access to Wi-Fi.

So before you leave, check with your carrier about roaming plans or international plans. However, it’s usually more affordable to buy a local SIM card upon arrival or install an eSIM before your flight. The latter is safer, as SIM card technology has evolved to be most secure in its purely digital form.

Not Considering Visa Requirements Traveling Internationally

One of the most serious mistakes people make when traveling internationally is not checking visa requirements. Americans are usually unaccustomed to applying for visas, leading many unwary travelers to forgo the legal planning for their trips. However, even though the US passport is one of the most powerful ones, many countries still require visas for US citizens to visit for even a day. Some examples include India, China, Indonesia, and many others.

Don’t make assumptions—double-check with your destination’s embassy website and sort out your visa well before your departure date.

International travel becomes far easier and more enjoyable when you plan ahead and avoid common pitfalls. By addressing these four mistakes, you’ll set yourself up for a smoother, stress-free adventure filled with nothing but the thrill of discovery. Bon voyage!
